What the sources say
| Topic | What the source says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Know your shut-off | Know where your main water shut-off valve is and test it. In most single-family homes it is in the basement or crawl space, on the wall facing the street. | Source page checked 2026-11-02 |
| Drip a faucet | Crack the faucet farthest from where water enters the house — a very slow drip keeps water moving. | Source page checked 2026-11-02 |
| Away from home | Keep the thermostat above 65 degrees when you leave for several days. | Source page checked 2026-11-02 |
| If a pipe froze | Shut off the water before you thaw it. | Source page checked 2026-11-02 |
| Thaw slowly | A hair dryer aimed at the frozen spot is appropriate. A blow torch is not. | Source page checked 2026-11-02 |
